Dehorning is one of the most widespread painful procedures in cattle farming. Polled (naturally hornless) genetics offer a welfare-positive alternative that avoids the procedure entirely.
Dehorning causes acute pain from tissue damage, followed by chronic pain during healing that can last weeks. Studies confirm that dehorned calves show pain behaviours — reduced feeding, avoidance of the dehorning area, altered gait — that persist for days after the procedure. Anaesthesia and analgesia dramatically reduce welfare harm and are mandated or strongly recommended in most national welfare codes, but compliance is inconsistent. The most welfare-positive solution eliminates the need for dehorning entirely: selecting for polled genetics. Polled cattle exist in all major breeds, and intensive selection or gene-editing can increase polled prevalence rapidly. Several dairy and beef breeding companies now offer polled semen commercially. The transition to polled herds eliminates the welfare harm, reduces farmer labour costs, and removes the annual procedural challenge — a genuine welfare and economic win.
