Outdoor pig production provides the most complete welfare improvement available to commercial pig farming — addressing enrichment, social behaviour, thermoregulation, and the expression of the full behavioural repertoire. Outdoor pigs that can root in soil, wallow in mud, and engage in social play show significantly better welfare indicators including lower cortisol, reduced stereotypic behaviour, and better immune function. The welfare benefits are not merely about preventing harm but actively enabling positive experiences. Challenges of outdoor systems include ground poaching in wet conditions, potential for external parasites, predation risk, and the difficulty of individual animal monitoring across large areas. These are manageable with good husbandry. The UK outdoor pig industry demonstrates that outdoor production is commercially viable at scale, though economic incentives to expand outdoor systems globally require consumer willingness to pay for welfare-certified products.
