Laying hens produce 250-300 eggs per year, placing enormous demands on their calcium metabolism. Structural bone disease causing chronic pain is endemic in commercial flocks.
Osteoporosis in laying hens causes chronic bone pain long before the terminal slaughter fractures that post-mortem surveys detect. Hens with fragile, depleted bone suffer pain from micro-fractures during normal activity — each landing from a perch or collision with cage wires risks fracture in severely osteoporotic individuals. Keel bone fractures (already discussed separately) occur on top of the broader osteoporosis problem, compounding welfare harm. The root cause is a biological conflict between the extreme egg production selected for in commercial breeds and the calcium requirements of healthy bone maintenance. Genetic selection that reduces egg laying rate or improves calcium metabolism efficiency would address the root cause. In the interim, good calcium nutrition, exercise access, and phased production with rest periods partially mitigate but cannot eliminate the problem in extremely high-yielding breeds.
