The welfare of abalone in aquaculture is an emerging area of study. While abalone lack the complex neural architecture of vertebrates, they show clear physiological stress responses. Poor water quality — particularly low dissolved oxygen and high temperatures — causes significant distress and mortality. Rough handling during grading and harvesting causes tissue damage and immune suppression. High stocking densities limit feeding access and cause resource competition. Slow growth rates mean animals spend years in farm conditions, making chronic stressors more impactful. Improving aeration, reducing stocking density, and developing less stressful handling methods are key welfare priorities.
