External parasites cause significant and often underappreciated suffering in cats. Flea infestation triggers intense, chronic itching that prevents normal rest and causes skin trauma from scratching and biting. Cats with flea allergy dermatitis develop painful hot spots and hair loss. The psychological distress of parasitic infestation — constant discomfort and inability to groom effectively — reduces quality of life substantially. Ear mites cause excruciating irritation; affected cats shake their heads constantly and scratch their ears raw. Tick-borne diseases cause acute systemic illness and death. Yet these are entirely preventable conditions with regular use of safe, veterinarian-recommended parasite prevention. Owner education is the primary barrier to protecting cats from unnecessary suffering.
