Welfare Considerations

Lameness causes pain with every stride. Competing or training a lame horse — even with pain management — allows continuing welfare harm in pursuit of performance. Medication that masks pain enables horses to be worked at intensities their compromised musculoskeletal system cannot safely sustain, risking injury and prolonged suffering. The pressure to compete valuable horses creates incentives to override welfare judgment that welfare regulations must counteract.
