Pet Hamster Welfare Needs

Pet hamsters are commonly housed in conditions that fail to meet their behavioral and spatial needs, causing chronic welfare problems.

Welfare Considerations

Hamster welfare in typical pet keeping is seriously compromised. Standard pet shop cages are many times too small for the behavioral needs of an animal adapted to vast home ranges. Without adequate space, exercise opportunities and appropriate substrates for burrowing, hamsters show stereotypic behaviors indicative of chronic frustration. The small size of hamsters makes their suffering easy to overlook — but their behavioral needs are proportionally enormous.

What You Can Do

Provide hamsters with a minimum 1m x 0.5m enclosure with deep substrate for burrowing
Include a large wheel appropriate for hamster body size
Handle hamsters in the evening when they are naturally active
Adopt hamsters from rescue organizations rather than purchasing from pet shops
