Vietnam's striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) industry produces over 1.5 million tonnes annually. Welfare improvements in this massive sector could benefit billions of individual fish.
Pangasius are farmed under conditions that, by any welfare standard, represent significant compromise. Extreme stocking densities prevent normal movement and feeding competition causes chronic stress in subordinate individuals. Water quality in high-density ponds deteriorates rapidly, and despite the species' hypoxia tolerance, chronic low-oxygen exposure suppresses immune function and growth. Antibiotic use has historically been high due to disease pressure in overcrowded systems. Harvest by pond drainage and net capture causes significant acute stress. Improving pangasius welfare at scale — given that billions of individuals are farmed annually — would have enormous aggregate welfare impact. Industry certification schemes are beginning to include basic welfare criteria alongside environmental sustainability requirements.
