Welfare Considerations

Hedgehog welfare has two distinct dimensions. In the wild, UK hedgehogs face habitat fragmentation from fencing and intensive gardening that prevents the ranging behavior essential for foraging and finding mates. Road deaths cause significant mortality. As pets, African pygmy hedgehogs are often housed in inadequate conditions: small enclosures without exercise wheels, incorrect temperatures that prevent natural torpor, and diets lacking variety. Their nocturnal nature means daytime handling causes sleep deprivation stress. For wild hedgehog welfare, creating hedgehog highways — holes in garden fences — and reducing pesticide use that depletes invertebrate prey are the highest-impact interventions. For pet owners, providing large enclosures, running wheels, appropriate temperature, and insect-based diets that reflect natural nutrition are essential.
