Chronic sub-lethal disease burden suppresses growth and immunity while causing persistent discomfort. The most effective welfare intervention is prevention: good husbandry that minimizes crowding stress, vaccination against known pathogens, biosecurity protocols that prevent introduction of new pathogens, and monitoring systems that detect early disease signs before they become epidemic. Antibiotic treatment, while sometimes necessary, should be a last resort rather than routine management.
