Welfare Considerations

Entangled sea lions experience progressive suffering as lines or bands cut into their tissue. The progressive nature of neck entanglement means animals may suffer for weeks or months before death. Disentanglement operations that remove gear quickly prevent this prolonged suffering. Marine debris reduction — particularly discarded fishing gear and packing materials — is the most important prevention measure.
