Sea bass welfare in intensive aquaculture is an increasingly studied area. As schooling fish, sea bass show complex social behaviors including hierarchical dominance, and poorly managed stocking densities produce chronic aggression and stress. Skin damage from aggressive fin-nipping worsens welfare and creates disease entry points. Water quality management is critical — sea bass are sensitive to oxygen levels, temperature fluctuations, and ammonia accumulation. At harvest, crowding in nets prior to killing concentrates thousands of fish under extreme conditions. Most sea bass are still killed by live icing without prior stunning, causing prolonged suffering in fish with well-documented stress responses. Electrical stunning adapted for sea bass is technically available and produces more rapid insensibility. EU aquaculture welfare frameworks are gradually incorporating species-specific requirements.
