Hatchlings disoriented by artificial light exhaust themselves crawling away from the ocean, dying of dehydration or predation. Nest poaching removes eggs but also subjects nesting females to direct disturbance. Beach protection programs that reduce artificial lighting, clear beach furniture at night, patrol nests against predation and poaching, and monitor nest temperatures allow turtles to complete nesting with minimal human interference. Nest translocation to cooler, better-protected sites is increasingly necessary as sand temperatures rise. Hatchery programs that maintain temperature diversity buffer against sex ratio skewing from climate warming.
