Honey bee welfare operates at two levels: the individual bee and the superorganism colony. Evidence suggests bees have basic emotional states — they show pessimistic cognitive biases after aversive experiences and optimistic ones after positive experiences. Individual bees experience pain from physical injury and stressful conditions. At colony level, welfare is assessed through health metrics: disease load, winter survival, foraging success, and behavioral indicators of stress. Managed beekeeping can support or undermine colony welfare depending on practices: regular health monitoring, Varroa management, adequate winter food stores, minimally disruptive inspection technique, and avoiding unnecessary colony manipulation improve welfare. Wild pollinators benefit when managed honey bee populations are kept healthy and not placed in densities that create resource competition. Pesticide advocacy, habitat planting, and supporting organic agriculture improve welfare for both managed and wild bees simultaneously.
