Laboratory rodent welfare exists on a spectrum from the legal minimum to current best practice — a gap that, at the scale of rodent research, represents enormous aggregate suffering or welfare improvement. Standard laboratory conditions — social isolation, barren cages, tail handling — cause measurable stress that affects both animal welfare and research data quality through confounding physiological stress responses. Providing nesting material (one of the most strongly motivated behaviors in mice) and shelters reduces anxiety indicators without affecting most experimental outcomes. Group housing of compatible same-sex animals dramatically improves welfare for social species. Refined handling (using cupped hands or tunnels rather than tail lifting) reduces stress and improves animal behavior. Analgesic use during and after painful procedures remains inconsistently applied despite clear welfare evidence. The Three Rs framework (Replace, Reduce, Refine) provides the ethical mandate; implementing Refinement beyond minimum standards is achievable immediately without research compromise.
