Plastic ingestion causes chronic internal harm to sea turtles, interfering with digestion and nutrition across all species.
Plastic ingestion causes multiple forms of suffering in sea turtles — physical obstruction, toxin exposure, false satiation that prevents adequate nutrition, and intestinal damage. The suffering can be prolonged and is largely invisible to observers. Turtles that ingest large amounts of plastic may float at the surface (bloat and float syndrome) unable to dive — visible evidence of acute welfare harm. Reducing plastic pollution is one of the most direct interventions for sea turtle welfare.
