Effective livestock guardian dog welfare depends on appropriate breed selection, early socialization and ongoing management support.
Guardian dogs serve an important welfare function by reducing both livestock predation and the lethal predator control that would otherwise follow. But guardian dogs are working animals with their own welfare needs — they require veterinary care, appropriate food and monitoring that they are functioning effectively. Poorly managed guardian dogs that are underfed, diseased or isolated suffer significant welfare harm while also failing to protect the livestock they are meant to guard.
