Food Labelling for Animal Welfare: Empowering Informed Consumer Choice

Welfare labelling systems help consumers make informed choices but vary enormously in rigour. Understanding what different labels mean — and what they don't guarantee — is essential for effective purchasing decisions.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Welfare labelling is a powerful tool for linking consumer choice to farm animal welfare outcomes, but its effectiveness depends on label rigour, transparency, and verification. The strongest labels specify exact standards, require independent third-party auditing, and cover the most welfare-significant dimensions of production. Weaker labels use vague language ("responsibly raised," "ethically sourced") without enforceable standards. Consumers genuinely motivated by welfare benefit from understanding the hierarchy of label credibility. Policy requiring mandatory method-of-production labelling for all animal products — as exists for eggs in the EU — is the most impactful structural intervention, removing the information asymmetry that currently makes welfare choices difficult.
