Varroa destructor mite has devastated global honeybee populations since its spread from Asian bees in the 20th century. Managing varroa is the central challenge of bee health and welfare worldwide.
Varroa represents the most severe welfare crisis in managed bee populations. Infested colonies experience chronic immune suppression, viral disease amplification, and physical damage from mite feeding — a slow deterioration that causes colony-wide suffering before eventual collapse. Effective management requires regular monitoring, timely treatment using approved acaricides (particularly oxalic acid which is least harmful to bees), and integration of hygienic breeding traits that allow bees to manage mite populations themselves. The welfare case for varroa management is compelling — untreated colonies experience prolonged suffering before death, while treated colonies can maintain healthy populations. Organic acids provide effective treatment with minimal welfare compromise.
