Cetacean strandings — where whales and dolphins beach themselves or are found in distress in shallow water — represent acute welfare emergencies that mobilise volunteer responders worldwide but also highlight systemic causes requiring prevention.
A stranded cetacean experiences acute and escalating suffering. The initial distress of shallow-water disorientation gives way to the physical pain of gravity pressing on organs designed to be supported by water, thermal dysregulation as skin exposed to air overheats, and the panic of being unable to return to the water. In mass strandings, the distress vocalisations of affected animals may attract companions who strand alongside them. The welfare response to strandings — keeping animals wet, cooling them, shading them, minimising human disturbance — addresses immediate needs but cannot address the underlying causes of systematic strandings. Preventing the anthropogenic causes of strandings, particularly naval sonar and ocean noise pollution, is the most important long-term welfare intervention.
