Perches are a fundamental welfare resource for laying hens, enabling natural roosting behaviour, reducing bone fracture risk, and supporting the expression of species-typical resting patterns that are denied in cage systems.
The perch is not a luxury for hens — it is a fundamental biological need. A hen without perch access at night is denied one of the most strongly motivated behaviours in her repertoire, forced to rest on the ground in a posture that offers neither the bone-loading benefit of perch use nor the security that elevation provides. The keel bone fracture epidemic in cage-free systems represents an unintended welfare consequence of systems designed to improve on battery cages but that have not yet optimised perch design for fracture prevention. This is a solvable problem — research has identified perch characteristics that dramatically reduce fracture rates — but implementation requires industry commitment to invest beyond minimum legal requirements.
