Tail docking exemplifies a fundamental tension in farm animal welfare: a procedure that causes pain is used to prevent a worse pain — but the underlying welfare problem (tail biting driven by inadequate enrichment and overcrowding) remains unaddressed. The procedure medicalises a management failure. A piglet whose tail is docked at one day old experiences real acute pain — the tail contains pain-sensitive nerves — but this individual pain is traded for a reduced population-level risk of a different pain later. The welfare calculus might favour docking in impoverished systems, but the welfare-maximising solution is addressing the enrichment deficits that drive tail biting — not accepting poor conditions while managing their consequences through painful prophylactic procedures.
