Microplastic pollution has permeated freshwater ecosystems worldwide. Emerging research reveals significant welfare and health impacts on fish and other freshwater species.
The welfare implications of microplastic ingestion by fish are still being quantified, but laboratory evidence is concerning. Fish that ingest microplastics show reduced appetite, impaired reproduction, inflammation of digestive tissues, and altered stress responses. Some studies show behavioural changes — reduced schooling cohesion, altered predator avoidance — that would impair survival in wild settings. The chronic, pervasive nature of microplastic exposure makes it qualitatively different from acute pollution events: animals cannot avoid it, and there is no clean refuge. The interaction with chemical pollutants adsorbed onto plastic surfaces adds complexity. While individual welfare impacts may seem subtle, applied across billions of freshwater fish, the aggregate suffering and impairment is substantial.
