Feedlot systems finish beef cattle at high densities on grain-based diets. Understanding the welfare challenges of feedlot production is important for consumers and advocates.
Feedlot welfare challenges cluster around the mismatch between cattle physiology and the intensive finishing environment. Cattle evolved as grazers consuming a high-fibre diet over large areas — feedlot grain diets and confined conditions run counter to these adaptations. Ruminal acidosis from rapid diet transition, respiratory disease from crowding, heat stress from high-density confinement without shade, and lameness from hard flooring combine to create significant welfare burdens. These are not inevitable features of beef production — extensive grazing systems have substantially lower rates of the metabolic and infectious diseases that characterise feedlot production. However, feedlot finishing enables higher growth rates and the marbled beef products demanded by some markets. The welfare cost is ultimately borne by the animals, and is rarely visible in the final product.
