Proper hoof care is fundamental to horse welfare; both shoeing and barefoot management have implications for equine soundness and comfort.
Hoof health is inseparable from overall horse welfare. A horse with painful or compromised hooves cannot move naturally, engage in normal behaviour, or work without distress. The debate between shoeing and barefoot management should be secondary to the quality of whichever approach is chosen: expert, regular farriery or trimming combined with appropriate management of diet, terrain, and exercise. Lameness is often detected late because horses mask pain, making proactive hoof care and early lameness assessment essential. Access to skilled, affordable farriery is an equity issue in horse welfare that deserves more attention.
