Hamsters are among the most commonly kept small pets, yet their welfare is frequently compromised by inadequate enclosures, improper handling and misunderstood behavioural needs.
Hamster welfare is one of the most underappreciated welfare issues in companion animal keeping. The gap between what pet shop advice recommends and what hamsters actually need is enormous. Standard pet shop cages provide a fraction of the space needed for natural behaviour, and the night-time activity of hamsters is routinely disrupted by owners who expect interaction during the day. Enrichment should include deep substrate for burrowing, wheels of sufficient diameter (28+ cm for Syrians), nesting materials, and foraging opportunities. Germany's new cage standards represent a landmark in small animal welfare regulation, and other countries are under pressure to follow. Better consumer education at point of sale is urgently needed.
