Hippos are semiaquatic, highly territorial animals whose complex needs present specific welfare challenges in zoo settings. Water quality, space and social grouping are critical management considerations.
Hippo welfare in zoos centres primarily on water access. A hippo without sufficient pool depth, volume and quality cannot thermoregulate, maintain skin health or express natural submersion behaviour. Many older zoo exhibits are inadequate by modern standards. Social management is equally challenging: incompatible animals in insufficient space leads to serious aggression, and separating social hippos causes stress. The most welfare-positive exhibits provide large deep pools with varied substrate areas, appropriate social groupings, and acoustic environments that allow natural communication. Hippos are also often nocturnal, meaning exhibit designs that accommodate night activity patterns improve welfare beyond what visitor-facing metrics capture.
