Finches housed in pairs or small groups with adequate flight space show active, exploratory behaviour and vocalise naturally. Dietary variety beyond seed mixes — including egg food, green foods, and appropriate supplements — prevents nutritional deficiency. The welfare improvements achievable through appropriate housing and nutrition are significant and inexpensive relative to the suffering caused by inadequate care. Aviary systems that allow natural flight are optimal for most small bird species.
