The sheer scale of commercial poultry production means that even small improvements in welfare monitoring have enormous impact across billions of birds. Traditional inspection-based approaches are insufficient for detecting welfare problems in large flocks before they become severe. Precision livestock farming technologies offer real-time, continuous monitoring that can alert stockpeople to early welfare deterioration through changes in movement patterns, vocalisation frequency, or distribution. Welfare outcome-based assessment — measuring what the animals experience rather than what inputs they receive — provides the most direct evidence of welfare state and is increasingly required by auditors and retailers.
