The best-designed housing, most adequate space, and most nutritious feed deliver welfare benefit only through the engagement of stockpeople who observe, respond to, and care for animals daily. Farmer and worker attitudes about animal sentience directly influence their attentiveness to welfare signals, their willingness to seek veterinary help, and their handling behaviour. Training that builds empathy for animal experience and competence in welfare assessment — rather than focusing only on production targets — produces measurable welfare improvement. Creating working conditions that allow stockpeople to develop genuine animal knowledge and feel pride in welfare outcomes builds the human infrastructure on which all other welfare improvements depend.
