Stocking density in fish farming is one of the most direct welfare levers available. The physiological consequences of crowding — chronic cortisol elevation, immune suppression, increased disease — create a cascade of welfare harms that compound across the production cycle. Fish in crowded conditions compete more intensely for food and space, experience more physical injury from aggression, and face greater infectious disease burden. Reducing stocking densities increases production costs but reduces welfare harms, disease treatment costs, and antibiotic dependence — creating aligned incentives when welfare certification commands a price premium.
