Fireworks phobia is one of the most common and severe welfare problems in companion dogs. The chronic nature of the fear — affecting dogs multiple times per year across their lifespan — represents a significant cumulative welfare burden. Many owners underestimate the severity of their dog's distress or assume it is unavoidable. Evidence shows that a combination of veterinary intervention, systematic desensitisation and environmental management substantially reduces suffering. Early intervention before fear becomes entrenched produces better outcomes. Vets and behaviourists should proactively raise noise phobia in consultations.
