Hens that cannot dust bathe show clear signs of behavioural frustration and perform vacuum dust bathing — a thwarted behaviour sequence — indicating strong internal motivation. Welfare science consistently identifies dust bathing access as a core requirement in laying hen systems. Cage-free systems that provide adequate litter depth and quality satisfy this need; many cage systems fail to meet even minimal threshold requirements. Progressive welfare standards now require verifiable dust bathing access for laying hens.
