Aquaculture disease represents a massive welfare challenge affecting billions of fish annually. Crowded conditions that promote disease transmission are themselves welfare-compromising, creating a cycle where production systems cause both the disease and the suffering from it. Prevention through biosecurity, vaccination and lower densities improves welfare more effectively than treatment. When disease does strike, mass culling decisions involve both individual welfare — ensuring humane killing — and population-level considerations. The welfare of fish during emergency culling operations is frequently inadequate, with methods including CO2 asphyxiation causing prolonged unconsciousness rather than instantaneous insensibility.
