Dairy bull calves have historically been among the most neglected animals in food production — born as an inevitable byproduct of milk production but contributing nothing directly to it. Early killing, inadequate nutrition, and bare-minimum housing were common. The welfare of these animals is now receiving increasing attention, driven by consumer concern about dairy practices. Systems that allow calves extended contact with their mothers before gradual separation, and that provide enriched housing and appropriate social grouping, deliver substantially better welfare outcomes at modest cost increases.
