Winter housing welfare is determined by the cumulative effect of space allowance, lying comfort, air quality, social management, and environmental complexity. Cattle in inadequate housing with insufficient lying space, wet or hard surfaces, or poor ventilation suffer measurably worse outcomes across all major welfare indicators. Lameness — already prevalent in dairy systems — worsens significantly in poorly managed indoor environments. The social environment is also critical: adequate trough space prevents competitive feeding exclusion, and stable social groups reduce agonistic interactions.
