Crowding stress in aquaculture is pervasive and often invisible to consumers but represents one of the largest welfare problems in animal agriculture by number of individuals affected. Fish in overcrowded conditions live in a state of chronic physiological stress with suppressed immunity, elevated disease susceptibility, and restricted behavioural expression. Subordinate individuals in hierarchical species such as salmon and trout bear disproportionate welfare costs, experiencing repeated displacement, reduced feeding access, and ongoing social stress. Maximum stocking density regulations exist in some jurisdictions but are often set at levels that still permit welfare-compromising crowding. Consumer and certification scheme pressure for lower density farming is the most direct pathway to improvement in the short term.
