Sea lice present a welfare dilemma: the infestation causes welfare harm, but many of the most effective treatments also cause welfare harm during application. Chemical treatments reduce lice loads but involve handling stress and potential drug side effects. Thermal delousing using 34C water baths removes lice but causes scale loss and cardiac stress. Mechanical treatments can cause physical injury. Laser-based systems (Stingray) offer a less invasive alternative but are expensive. The welfare calculation must weigh the chronic harm of untreated infestation against the acute harm of treatment. Industry investment in prevention — through location selection, fallowing, vaccination if available, and biological control — is preferable to repeated treatment cycles. Monitoring must be frequent enough to treat before burdens reach welfare-impairing levels.
