Hatchery-reared salmon are used for both aquaculture production and wild population supplementation. The welfare of hatchery fish is shaped by early-life conditions that have lasting effects on both their wellbeing and post-release survival.
Hatchery welfare is important both intrinsically and instrumentally. Fish suffering in poor hatchery conditions experience genuine welfare compromise during their time in the facility. Additionally, poor early welfare has lasting effects: chronically stressed hatchery fish have blunted cortisol responses that impair adaptive stress management later in life, and high-density rearing produces fish with reduced predator awareness that perform poorly after release. Improving hatchery welfare therefore serves both animal welfare and conservation outcomes simultaneously. Key improvements include reducing stocking density, providing environmental heterogeneity, using natural light cycles, and implementing structured feeding regimes that engage natural foraging behaviour. These changes typically also improve growth efficiency and reduce disease incidence.
