Feedlot cattle welfare is characterised by the management of risks inherent in intensive confinement production. Heat stress is the most significant seasonal welfare risk, with mortality events during heat waves causing large-scale acute suffering and death. Shade provision, water availability, and pen density management are the primary prevention tools but are not universally implemented. Mud management affects welfare through hoof health, thermal regulation, and the energy cost of movement through deep mud. The dietary transition risk is well understood and managed through step-up feeding protocols, but acidosis still occurs when management is inadequate. The concentrated scale of feedlot operations means that welfare problems affect very large numbers of animals; even small percentage improvements in health outcomes translate to significant reductions in total suffering.
