Poultry welfare science has had genuine policy impact, with research findings translating into commercial practice changes more rapidly than in many other farmed species. Gait scoring for broiler lameness, developed in academic settings, is now required by major retail welfare standards covering millions of birds. Lighting research has changed industry practice around photoperiods. The cognitive complexity of chickens, including their capacity for basic arithmetic, self-control, and social learning, has shifted scientific and public understanding of these animals. The challenge is that the scale of commercial poultry production means that research findings must be translatable to operations managing hundreds of thousands of birds, limiting the applicability of some individually-focused welfare improvements. Applied poultry welfare science addresses this challenge by developing assessment tools and management practices that work at commercial scale.
