The short productive lifespan of modern dairy cows is both a welfare indicator and a welfare driver. Cows culled early due to lameness, mastitis, or reproductive failure have typically experienced significant suffering before exit. The high replacement rates required by short-lived herds place ongoing demand on heifer rearing, which itself has welfare implications. Longevity is thus a meaningful welfare metric: herds with high average culling ages tend to have lower disease rates, better body condition, and more positive human-animal relationships. Progressive dairy farmers and breeding organisations are increasingly adopting longevity as a selection trait, recognising that a cow that remains productive, healthy, and pain-free for eight or more lactations represents a better outcome for animals, farmers, and the environment than one replaced every three years.
