BRD represents a concentration of welfare harms: the stressors that trigger it (transport, weaning, commingling) are themselves welfare compromising, and the disease that follows causes significant pain, breathing difficulty, and systemic illness. Many affected cattle suffer for days before being identified and treated, and those that do not respond to treatment may suffer for weeks. The disease is not inevitable; pre-conditioning protocols that reduce transport stress, allow immune recovery before commingling, and implement vaccination before rather than during peak stress periods significantly reduce incidence. Early detection systems including electronic monitoring of body temperature and activity have the potential to identify affected animals days earlier than traditional observation, reducing the duration of untreated suffering substantially.
