Feedlot cattle face welfare challenges from confinement, diet transition, and disease risk during the finishing period.
Feedlot cattle welfare is shaped by the fundamental characteristics of the system: large groups of animals in confined spaces, dramatic diet change, climate exposure, and disease pressure. The transition from forage to high-concentrate diets that enables rapid weight gain also causes digestive disruption — subacute ruminal acidosis is widespread and causes chronic discomfort. Bovine respiratory disease outbreaks cause acute suffering. Heat and cold stress affect wellbeing seasonally. The scale of feedlot operations — tens of thousands of cattle per site — makes individual welfare monitoring difficult, making system-level welfare improvements the highest-leverage intervention.
