Zoo clouded leopards face welfare challenges rooted in their secretive nature and high sensitivity to stress. Animals in inadequate enclosures without sufficient elevated hiding areas, complex vegetation, and opportunities to express arboreal behavior show chronic hypervigilance and stress responses. Social housing requires exceptional care: incompatible pairs can inflict fatal injuries, and even compatible pairs need careful introduction and ongoing monitoring.
