Rainbow trout welfare in aquaculture is shaped by water quality, stocking density, handling frequency, and slaughter method. Fish in clean, well-oxygenated water at appropriate densities show better behavioral indicators, lower injury rates, and higher disease resistance than those in suboptimal conditions. The stress response to handling is rapid and intense; routine interventions including grading, vaccination, and transfer should be designed to minimize duration and intensity of exposure. Slaughter is a critical welfare moment: trout slaughtered by asphyxiation or CO2 exposure without prior stunning experience a prolonged and distressing loss of consciousness. Electrical stunning renders fish immediately insensible and is increasingly available and cost-effective for commercial operations.
