The Five Domains model provides a comprehensive framework for assessing farm animal welfare across nutrition, environment, health, behavior, and mental state. It moves welfare assessment beyond the absence of suffering.
The Five Domains model represents a conceptual advance in welfare science by explicitly requiring assessment of mental states and positive welfare experiences, not merely the absence of suffering. Under the traditional Five Freedoms framework, welfare could be considered acceptable if specific negative states were absent. The Five Domains model requires asking: is this animal experiencing positive states such as comfort, satiety, and the satisfaction of behavioral motivation, or merely surviving without acute suffering? For farm animals, this distinction matters enormously. A sow in a well-managed gestation group may be free from obvious pain but still be experiencing chronic frustration from insufficient space or enrichment. The Five Domains framework provides the conceptual language to capture this distinction and drive management toward genuine positive welfare.
