Artificial light pollution disrupts sea turtle nesting and hatchling orientation, threatening welfare and conservation.
Light pollution is one of the most tractable threats to sea turtle welfare because it is both preventable and reversible. Female turtles deterred from natural nesting beaches by artificial light either deposit eggs in suboptimal sites with lower hatching success or abort nesting attempts entirely. Hatchlings disoriented by artificial light walk inland rather than toward the sea, facing death from dehydration, exhaustion, and predation. Each disoriented hatchling represents a preventable welfare harm. Turtle-friendly lighting ordinances, beach lighting management programs, and resident education can eliminate this threat at relatively low cost.
