Cattle dehorning is one of the most widely performed and most painful routine procedures in livestock production. Behavioral and physiological evidence — head rubbing, guarding behavior, elevated cortisol, reduced feed intake — demonstrates significant acute and prolonged pain in both disbudded calves and dehorned adults. Simple intervention with local anesthetic before the procedure and NSAID administration controls pain effectively at minimal cost. The long-term solution — breeding polled cattle — eliminates the welfare problem entirely and is commercially viable with modern genomic selection tools. Consumer awareness of dehorning welfare concerns can accelerate both analgesic adoption and polled genetics programs.
