Workload assessment is a welfare obligation for all people responsible for horses in work. Overwork causes acute suffering through exhaustion, muscle pain, and respiratory distress during excessive exertion, and causes chronic welfare problems through cumulative musculoskeletal injury, weight loss, and psychological fatigue. Horses used in high-demand disciplines — racing, eventing, endurance — are at particular risk of being worked beyond their fitness level, especially when competition schedules or commercial pressures take precedence over individual animal capacity. Subtle signs of fatigue and overwork including reluctance to move forward, altered facial expression, reduced social interaction, and prolonged recovery from exercise often precede obvious lameness or collapse. Regular fitness monitoring using heart rate recovery measurements, lactate testing in performance horses, and systematic gait assessment helps identify when workload exceeds capacity.
